San Diego is a land of ceiling fans and screen doors. I think I noticed it first at lestat's -- two creaky screen doors give entrance to the place -- and here there's a ceiling fan providing a much needed cool breeze, and stark light from a bare compact fluorescent tube.

There are also these odd beetles. I do not know how they enter the room, with the two doors closed, but they do. They start buzzing around, which is annoying because of the noise and because i'm always afraid they'll land on me while I'm sleeping and crawl up my nose or something.

This fear is not completely unfounded. The one that appeared last night had a chance encounter with the ceiling fan, which propelled it directly into my face.

The best way to deal with these beetles seems to be to hit them with something, for example a notebook. The beetle goes into shock for a few seconds, so you can boot it out onto the other side of the screen door.

What is odd is that we haven't had June bugs this year. They are kind of a deep amber color and usually follow the calendar pretty well. June=bugs. We've had a very grey and cool June and then suddenly a very hot July--maybe somehow they got killed off.

Yeah! I have my door closed and suddenly I hear one coming at me from my door. I freak out and end up slamming the heck out of them with my notebook.

A note.. If you find a dead one in your room, it probably laid eggs.
