The weather here is perfect. 70°F, clear and sunny.
Ice on my windshield leaving the lab

37 degrees in Baton Rouge

Who knew it got cold in Louisiana?
[Hurricane Gustav predicted storm track as of August 27th, 2008]

Hurricane Gustav is coming our way.
Somehow when I looked at the weather report before leaving Baton Rouge, I must not have really interpreted the numbers correctly, because somehow I concluded, "Oh, it's springtime there!" but that is really not the case. The city has spared no expense and today performed some of its most dismal weather, a foggy drizzle and nearly freezing. It goes without saying that there are no leaves on the trees yet. The contrast with Baton Rouge could not be greater.
I have been in Louisiana for less than two weeks. In that time, it has been muggy and hot; it has frozen and I had to scrape ice off my car's windshield in the evening; there has been torrential downpour on at least two occassions; once, 30 MPH winds; and last night the sky was lit up with lightning. In between, it has been 74 degrees and sunny.
It looks like all of New Mexico is messed up from last night's storm. Both I-40 and I-25 are closed in parts and a large fraction of the state in under travel advisory. But it's bright and sunny now in Alamogordo and it looks like things are lighting up to the north, so we'll give it a go.

snow

There was a huge amount of snow yesterday in Buffalo (70 miles West of here), at least huge for mid-October. Us recent arrivals don't know what's normal and what's not in these parts, but apparently this was unprecidented:

On Thursday, 8.3 inches of heavy snow set the record for the ''snowiest'' October day in Buffalo in the 137-year history of the weather service, said meteorologist Tom Niziol. (AP via NYT)

Meanwhile, it's sunny and 48 degrees here in Rochester with no snow on the ground. That AP article reports a hundred thousand people without electricity, etc etc in Buffalo. (You'd think that in a place where it snows pretty much all the time, they'd be a little more prepared?) EDIT: Check out the photos attached to that article.

Or, in the more-emotionally-charged-than-usual words of the National Weather Service:

THE INSTABILITY PARAMETERS ARE ALMOST HISTORIC WITH SUCH A SITUATION WITH A 62 DEGREE LAKE INVOLVED MAKE THIS ALMOST UNPRECEDENTED. LAKE INDUCED CAPES ARE WAY UP INTO 1200-1500 J/KG RANGE...INVERSION/EQUIL LEVELS ARE OVER 20K FT! (NWS via weather.com's blog)

It is snowing.

autumn

Oct. 12th, 2006 12:40 pm
Autumn is here. The sky is clear, the air is cold, and the trees are many-colored.
Last night I went to the loft to watch the lightning storm. With the storm in the distance I stood in the wind on the roof and watched the distant lightning and felt the storm's arrival. Then, in the loft, battened the hatches while the storm moved through. I had excellent vantage of the city's highest points, the skyscrapers, the radio towers, the lighting tower at the train yard. Disappointingly there were no strikes there, only cloud-to-cloud and far away.
The biggest winter storm in New York City history — destined for lionization as the Blizzard of '06 —buried the region under snow.

Oddly enough, it did not snow here in Rochester, and neither is it snowing today.

New Orleans

Sep. 1st, 2005 06:00 pm
It is amazing and horrible what is happening in New Orleans, and I only know 1/100000th of it. I feel very media deprived on the issue, but I get the feeling most people (not there obviously) are still in the "just another hurricane" mindset. I wish I could go down there and be of some use. The stories, though, are crazy.

Does anyone in ROC have an extra TV antenna?

Springtime arrived this morning, right on schedule at 7:42 am.

Very soon thereafter we received the year's first spring snow.
