moving

So, it's vaguely occurring to me that I need to move across the country in a few weeks. How do you even do that? I know, I've moved country-to-country, but that's different, because then you're not supposed to bring your huge collection of physics textbooks, etc.

Yesterday I broke down and cleaned up this room I'm living in. You see, the other residents of this apt are all busy packing things up because they have to move out in a week. This meant the living room was all cluttered so I actually sought refuge in this room.. which desperately needed cleaning (and MattJ's furniture is now out in the backyard... shhh!).

It's quite bizarre to actually have a room of my own. Too bad I have to move out next week.

(P.S. do you live in San Diego? Can I live with you?)

Your trip to Rochester

Hi Tobin,
This is Kenny's father Sunny. (949-233-1865). When are u going to Rochester? Kenny's brother David is here in OC and he has a car here to take back. I want to discuss whether we can arrange something to drive back depending on schedule. His stuff is in Rochester storage. By the way do you want to buy a almost new Futon, Fridge etc. In any case give me a call and see whether we can work out somethings. If not that is fine too.

Sunny

Well, if you have a lot of stuff to move and don't want to drive the moving truck, you have a few options. We're just doing the Uhaul thing, because for us it's half the price of a moving company. But your moving is much longer distance. You can also try Upack or Umm there's another company like that where you pack a small moving container and they move it for you. I saw an ad for it the other day, but I've forgotten the name already.

When do you need a place to stay? I might be able to hook you up depending on the dates. It's on campus so you'd only have to walk to work =) Let me know!

this moving business is not any fun at all, huh? i only just figured out what i am doing. i have a reasonable amount of furniture that i didn't really want to give up, but u-haul is exorbitantly expensive. and when you're moving that far, a plane trip just seems so anticlimactic.

so i'm borrowing my parents' minivan, taking a week-long road trip through the rockies, spending a week in seattle finding a place and moving in, and then driving back (though in three days the second time). therefore, i've satisfied all the requirements of moving lots of crap cheaply AND getting a vacation in this summer.

hmm, when are you driving back?

how are the argentina plans?

argentina plans have been abandoned entirely. it's less disappointing than expected, since it delays the break-up with the current boyfriend by about two months, AND i realize i'd be ten times more stressed if i was trying to leave the country in the midst of moving and starting school. so i'm almost relieved.

i'm leaving in the middle of august for seattle, then driving back to minneapolis at the start of september. then maybe spending a day or two around here before flying back to put down my roots in seattle for a few years.

When I moved from Chicago to Berkeley, I decided that one-way moving truck prices were prohibitively expensive, so I donated my TV stand to my little brother and my bicycle to my dad, and shipped all my books and other essentials like TV, VCR and computer across the country using media mail (for the books) and UPS (for the rest). I then managed to find a 1-way plane ticket for $99 on Vanguard, via Kansas City (I think they may have since stopped flying, but Southwest tends to have 1-way fares that equal 1/2 the price of round trip). Overall, this all worked out reasonably well. UPS destroyed my TV and computer, but they paid for a new TV after a lengthy telephone battle, and luckily I had backed up important stuff on my computer and ended up obtaining a much newer one for $200 anyway. My books and CD's and DVD's almost all arrived, only slightly damaged. One small box of books that was packed in a box that was too thin disappeared, but I don't think they were very important. You can always pay more for postage to insure safer delivery.... I bought all new furniture once I got settled in Berkeley. The main annoyance of this plan was that it took *days* and *days* to pack up all that stuff for shipping. And that some CD cases got cracked and such.... so if you have a cheap way of carting it across country yourself that's probably a better idea...
