CATS is a new high-speed ferry between Rochester, NY and Toronto, ON that will go into service next month. A one-way crossing takes 2.25 hours and costs $28. By comparison, the same trip via Greyhound takes between 4.3 and 6 hours and costs $41.

Yes, the crossing only takes 2.25 hours, but the fingerprinting and other harassment by the DHS will take another two hours :(
(Yes, I'm still pissed they subjected me to a one-hour "interview" at Dulles airport last January)

So, apparently in Rochester they have built a massive new ferry terminal just for this, while in Toronto (or so I've heard from friends there) there's just some big makeshift *tent*. Somehow, I think it's gonna be Americans from Rochester using it almost exclusively. I mean, why would somebody from Toronto go to Rochester?!?

Wait a minute, I thought Canadians were the one group of non-Americans that Homeland Security still lets in without fingerprints, etc.

I want to take a ferry to Toronto! I wonder if I'll be able to do that while visiting my brother's graduation.

They just a few days ago announced that all the Western European countries that were going to be exempted no longer will be. So I assume it's the same as anyone else. Though the no-visa requirement is still around I think.

Driving across the border is pretty trivial.. usually they just wave you through. Is that changing?

They always asked you if you were a US or Canadian citizen or other before - I just imagine that the "other" part is going to get tougher.

Not in my experience.. last time I re-entered the U.S. from Mexico, for instance, I was just waived through.

Starting this fall (September, I think) visitors from countries on the Visa Waiver list (mostly western European countries plus a few other "civilized" countries like Australia) will have their fingerprints and photos taken unless we get a passport with biometric data implanted (no country issues such passports). We don't need a tourist visa for stays up to 90 days, which saves me about $200 (visa cost plus trip to the embassy in Stockholm).
I currently have six U.S. entry stamps in my passport, and it was issued in 2001. No wonder they're getting suspicious :)

Yes, Canadians currently don't need to give fingerprints and have their photos taken, but I'm pretty sure that'll change soon...
