I <3 LA

»Every Wednesday at a suburban Los Angeles park in North Hollywood, a group of talented individuals come together to create a form of self-expression you may have never experienced before: a mind-blowing synthesis of sign spinning and street dance.«

Reminds me of:

»No matter what you do in L.A., your behavior is appropriate for the city. Los Angeles has no assumed correct mode of use. You can have fake breasts and drive a Ford Mustang – or you can grow a beard, weigh 300 pounds, and read Christian science fiction novels. Either way, you're fine: that's just how it works. You can watch Cops all day or you can be a porn star or you can be a Caltech physicist.«

Soon, you will only be a six hour drive from its smoggy wonderfulness. I don't love LA, but I can see the appeal - and I admit that I do like SoCal.

Also, you should read California Bones. Fast and enjoyable, and a fun gritty, light fantasy near-alternate LA.

I am so pleased by the sign-twirlers. I'd noticed that the ones in Phoenix were getting more and more animated, so I hope they're also doing this. Way to take a menial job and make it interesting and rewarding.

You know it's a great American city because it has produced an influential body of work across many art forms, not only film but literature, music and subcultures. Raymond Chandler, west coast punk, Six Feet Under, surf/skate culture...

I find it fascinating and appalling. I would never live there. My own favorite song about LA is Butt Town (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X08Y38927xI) by Iggy Pop.

This is why I love visiting home.
