PhD comics is spot-on, as usual:

"I promise, by the time you write your thesis, you won't get a single edit or comment from me."

"It'll be that good?"

"I won't care anymore."

I was just thinking (and posting) about how I hope my advisor starts "caring less" so I can move forward without so many road blocks. I am his first and only PhD student, so I am not sure how much of his attention I will actually be able to lose.

It sounds like yours is a datapoint on the right side of the professorial density function:

Yes! Like when he stopped by my desk without any warning today for a meeting that turned out to last over 2 hrs. Umm, that meant losing the afternoon from the real work tasks I had on my plate. We just met on Tuesday this week and he doesn't come to campus on Wednesdays, so was it really necessary to stop by today? I don't want to be micro-managed!

How often do you meet with your advisor?

It depends on what counts as "meet". We nominally have a group meeting every week, but it doesn't actually provide much in the way of useful interaction.

Unfortunately my advisor and I don't actually have any research in common. She provides very good advice about political sort of things, however.

My advisor doesn't really speak my language, either. But he has some basic understanding of what I am doing and he seemed interested in learning more. The advisor I originally picked was the department director who also didn't speak my language, but told me flat-out that he would sign off on anything to get me out the door fast. Unfortunately, he died very suddenly and unexpectedly (maybe suicide, autopsy never released to public). Anyway, I found myself in a department I didn't really belong and my advisor was the "closest" match. I'd rather be working with an "expert" in my field, but such is life...

Why does he not have glasses in panel 1 & 4?

Also: Adam managed to combine hands-off with deadline-on, which is if not the best of both worlds, at least respectable.

Things are different here.
