[Caltech from the air]
Today I went up on a demo ride with the Caltech Aero Club, which is based at the nearby El Monte airport (EMT), a cute general aviation airport a few miles from here. If I were staying in Pasadena I'd be mighty tempted to take up flying lessons with them. Here's a photo of the Caltech campus as seen out the window of Cessna 172 N19760 this afternoon.

The airport looks to have a pretty good diner too, Annia's Kitchen.

That's what I assumed, too, but so far I haven't found anything in Louisiana.

As far as the complicated airspace... they like to spin that as a positive, as in "if you can fly here you can fly anywhere!"

This looks like a pretty good flying club directory: Landings: Flying Club Directory (http://www.landings.com/evird.acgi$pass*98008913!_h-www.landings.com/_landings/pages/flying_clubs.html#loc-usa).

Unrelated, but I thought you might enjoy this article:

My dad sent it to me with the comment "Leave it to Rochester to make booze and electricity."

You should make the "$100 hamburger" run to the airport on Catalina..

I was amused to find that there's actually a directory of "$100 hamburger" opportunities:

Have I come to stereotype Pasadena as smoggier than it really is, or is that a particularly clear day? Looks like an interesting place to fly with the mountains right next to the city. It seems unlikely flying schools are too few or unavailable in Louisiana. There are big variations in how much lessons can cost; Louisiana could be cheaper. Very important also to try to find out from other pilots on the field what they think of the flight school, their planes, and comparative places nearby. I.E. the local Davis joint is known to hold onto their students awfully long, I guess for concern of legal issues. On the other hand, extra training is not the worst thing in the world. You might check out the Light Sport Aircraft option too (see wiki for starters).
