Apparently it is time to dispose of certain delusions, and now revel in a simple truth: Most citizens of this country are morons.

Actually, it's the hordes of people that hate poor people, hate gay people, hate arabs, enjoy war, and believe that not only is the bible the literal word of god, but is also the primary law of the United States, that caused us to lose.

It's the poor people who vote for Bush. Are you saying they hate themselves?

The democrats have been losing support of the working-class people for a long time. My theory as to why is because we end up sounding like intelectual elitists. Calling your opponents "morons" is part of the problem.

It's the poor people who vote for Bush. Are you saying they hate themselves?

Yes. Either they are aware that they voted against their own interests (in which case they are self-hating), or they are unaware that they voted against their own interests (which brings us back to them being morons).

Again, this is why they didn't vote democratic. You assume they are motivated by selfish motives.

Perhaps they are not. Perhaps they make choices based on principles. They believe in freedom. They believe in liberty. They believe in protecting one's own. George W. Bush offered them someone who believes in those same things.

Dismissing people as morons because their notion of doing the right thing isn't just looking selfishly at their own benefit is, IMO, wrong. I also believe it reduces your chances of winning over those people.

I know a couple. The only consolation I can take is that they're not gloating. I'm hoping that's the cold hard realization that this asshat they voted in has his testicles in the fire. But with my luck it's just christian temperance. :/ Or celebration hangovers.

That was my thought as I went to bed last night. I'm still feeling bitter and angry. Unfortunately, if we continue with that attitude we'll continue to lose with even greater margins.

Nicholas Kristof said it best in his NY Times editorial this morning (www.nytimes.com 11-3-04) titled "Living Poor, Voting Rich" or "What the Democrats need to learn from Republicans" (Sacto Bee title).

Another key factor - the 90% of those under age 24 that DIDN'T EVEN BOTHER TO VOTE! Talk about not paying attention to their own self interest!

Then I ask you this: what CAN we do? Bush doesn't give a rat's ass about letters to the editor, protests, TV commercials, etc. You can't get the man to listen unless you're holding a wad of cash. I guess the next step might be outright revolution.

Probably not.

The one redeeming thought in all this is that now Bush will have to accept all the blame himself for the mess he's working on.

Though it's a small consolation, I really was wondering how anybody (ie Kerry) could possibly fix the mess Bush has created.

probably not... but it might serve as a wake-up call to the Democratic party, emphasizing now desperately it needs to reconnect with the middle class. I pray that at some point, even some of the most fanatical Bush-supporters are going to see that the emperor has no clothes.

That is my most fervent prayer as well.

My expectation is that the trip to hell will remain a slow but steady one, never quite jerky enough to make the greater population think. And perhaps that is what they really want. One nation, under a god.

I have one word for you: DRAFT.

Maybe the reinstatement of the draft is a long shot, but nothing serves as a better wake up call than two guys in government cars pulling up in front of your neighbor's house, walking to yours and telling you that your husband/wife was just blown to smithereens by an IED. I live at Fort Campbell and see it happen all of the time.

yeah, but that's kind of along the lines of "cutting your nose to spite your face," or whatever the idiom is.

someone here came up with a silver lining that I think we should elevate to the level of motto: "Democrats. We still have the filibuster!"

Not just the filibuster, but the ones we've got left aren't afraid to use it. We lost all the Breaux' and Graham's and Zell Miller's and such. And hopefully we'll get a good fighting minority leader. Maybe even Kerry...
