Winter vacation is (approx) dec 26 to jan 11. I am thinking of making a big Mexico trip at that time.

I haven't checked whether this is reasonable yet, but maybe driving to La Paz (Baja California Sur) and then taking the ferry to Mazatlan? It would be squeezing the time rather short.. maybe I could skip the first week of school. hnar hnar.

Looking at the proposed route, it does look a little crazy. Note that it's approx 400 miles from Tucson to Orange County alone -- that's just the 'home stretch':

list of driving distances in Baja:

says it is about 20 hours to La Paz from the border (approx 4 days?)

4 days to drive 20 hours? I thought a vanagon could go faster than that. :) I guess a relevant question is how far they've built that fancy new toll highway; I'd expect you can travel faster on it than the normal local roads.

AFAIK the toll road only runs as far south as Ensenada.

Driving at night is not recommended, and there's not so much daylight in December. (-:

Although there's a bit more of it as you drive south. (-:

Yeah, it could be a good reminder that sun exists.

This would also be the mud/washed-out-road season. Though, actually, as I think of it, January is typically dry and warm. It's February when things get particularly soggy.
