Amtrak (http://www.amtrak.com/) has some ridiculous deal going on — 70% off of tickets on most of the east-of-the-mississippi trains. $30 from Rochester to New York Penn Station. $40 from Chicago to Washington DC. There is a train that goes down the East Coast -- Boston down into the South, through Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Mississipii, Alabama, finally to New Orleans. That sounds pretty fun.

I almost bought a house today. I mean, not really, but I felt like announcing, "I'll take it!" $55k, four bedrooms upstairs, two big rooms and a kitchen downstairs, a finished/insulated attic, new furnace, clean basement, 10 minutes walk from the UR foot bridge. Backyard that could easily accomodate a hot tub. Not as big as I'd like for a co-op, but not outside of the realm of possibility. I mean, the idea of being able to buy a house—completely novel. Open houses are rad. There's nothing like walking through a big empty house that you could buy right now to provoke the imagination. The realtors are all on their best behavior. It's quite amusing.

One of my favorite memories from Oscar Wilde House is the dinners that Allegra and Sarah cooked on Friday evenings. I think they cooked something especially good for Shabbat, usually a tasty chicken dish, maybe beets. But the best thing is that they would bake up several loaves of Challah bread. I would usually arrive home late on Fridays, I think, and enjoy a dinner of Challah bread, olive oil, and red wine our cozy living room, while Sarah, Allegra, et al, sang their shabbat songs. It was very nice. When Ryan, Brette, and I visited Nickel City co-op earlier this month, we went around the table and everyone gave the one piece of advice they thought would benefit a new co-op. One of them was, "Bake bread at least once a week." Sounds like a plan.

Ryan is on some kind of a salt-free week. It was Brette's idea. It was frustrating at first because we had absolutely no food in the house save for a few precious salt-free creations. Fortunately starvation has been averted by a much-needed trip to Wegmans.
