Apr. 27th, 2002 12:00 amRained vigorously most of the afternoon.
Finally got the Olympus D-520 camera working under Linux. The camera supposedly implements the ``USB Mass Storage'' interface, so it should appear as a storage device (like a hard disk) to the USB system. The first trouble was that for some reason the "USB Mass Storage" option didn't appear on the USB kernel configuration page. It turns out that since usb-storage requires SCSI support, that option doesn't show up until after you enable SCSI support. Wouldn't it make more sense to have the USB Mass Storage option appear anyway, and have it figure out the dependencies? Anyway, the next problem was that it just didn't work. Finally I found a webpage (Olympus bro D-150 and Linux) explaining that Olympus's USB firmware has a bug, where the camera sends the wrong result code, which Linux interprets as an error (as it should), while Windows just ignores it. So the "solution" is to hack the kernel to recognize the erroneous "success" code. Now the only remaining annoyance is that I can't have my mouse and the camera connected simultaneously, as Dell, in their infinite wisdom, only included a single USB port on this machine. In any case, it's quite nice to be able to simply mount the camera into the filesystem and copy images normally... just like it should be.
Walked with Solveig and Jessica out to S:t Hans. (Photo, Photo) Quite nice, especially since it's light out until about 9pm!
