most diappointing lucia ever
Dec. 13th, 2001 12:00 am> candles wake you up with cookies this morning?
I have to say it was the most disappointing Lucia ever.
For those of you who don't know about St. Lucia, here's what Svenska Institutet has to say about the holiday:
The Swedish Lucia celebration, on December 13th, is a good example of an annual festival of medieval origin, which has acquired a new content. The celebrations named after the Sicilian St Lucia do not have much in common with their namesake. In Sweden Lucia is a symbolic figure who greets us when the days are darkest in order, as the saying goes, to bring back the light.
The celebration sometimes includes Lucia coffee, which is served with "Lucia cats", saffron-flavoured rolls, and ginger biscuits. Lucia symbolically opens the door to Christmas and can be perceived as a symbol of the good forces in life.
Anyway, the way Lucia is traditionally celebrated in Swedish families is that the daughter of the household (assuming one exists) wakes up her parents in the morning with a tray of coffee and saffron rolls, etc. Oh yeah, and princess leia hair (?) and a crown of candles.
Now that they "have equality" in this modern, secular Sweden, this seems a little bit anachronistic. So the way they celebrate Lucia in the korridors at Delphi is by having the boys and the girls alternate years. One year the girls wake up the boys with coffee and treats, the next it's the boys' turn. Naturally, in a student environment this takes on a life of its own. I've been regailed with tails of particularly exciting korridor Lucia celebrations for the last six months.
This year it was the girl's turn. And in our korridor absolutely nothing happened. It was really very disappointing, like waking up on Christmas day only to discover that everyone else had forgotten.
