none of this "saturday" or "sunday" nonsense! we need nonstop! okay, megan and i are going to attempt to escape the evil confines of the university of california at san diego at noon tomorrow, rent a car, and blast on up the eisenhower highway system at felonious speed. it's five freakn' hundred miles from here to there so who knows when we'll actually arrive. then we have to leave sometime on sunday with enough time to get back before work starts on monday, you see. actually i have a mind to play hookie from work for a day but i'm not sure if my compatriots can do likewise. do you understand how much hotttubbing we're going to have to do to make up for the last N months?

Ah, Berkeley. It was 1000.7 miles door-to-door-to-door and worth every one. It's a long drive and a tedious one alone, but with two comrades (who even do the driving!) and a mind for adventure, the hours are nothing. Twelve hours from San Diego to Berkeley, although that does include stopping for gas, food, and a birthday party.

It felt strange to be back -- refreshing and right. There was traditional commonspace lounging and berkeley wandering, zachary's pizza for a big reunion, a screening of bum's paradise held in an emeryville parking lot, brunch at anne's kitchen (but couldn't convince anyone to split a pattymelt + banana pancakes -- a trick perfected by diane and me). It was a good trip and for some reason it feels silly to try to write about it. We didn't even get around to the hot tubbing.

The light was just right to make the Central Valley pretty, golden in one direction and green in the other. Alas, I took no landscape shots. I was going to write captions for these photos, but I think they're better on their own.

Thanks to all my Berkeley friends for being so swell and welcoming me home, and to Megan and Matt for their fine roadtripping.

The "boob patrol" and Kenny's CERN t-shirt made a great combination!

And the Quark and the quark t-shirt are too.

That looks like Barrows. How'd you get on the roof?

There's a major Cingular installation up there that they are working on, so they often leave the door to the roof open. (-:
