This morning I waited patiently at the corner of Genessee Ave and Mt. Alifan Dr. for the number 41 bus, which would take me to work. The bus arrived and I eagerly climbed up the steps, showing my newly minted UCSD bus pass to the driver.

"You can't use that here."

"Why not?"

"You have to go up to Balboa."

"One stop?"

"That's right."

"Can we just let it slide this time?"

"Nope."

"You're kidding me."

"If you run, you can still make it."

And so the bus driver made me get off the bus and run to the next stop. Thankfully the bus had a red light and there were other people waiting at the next stop. When I climbed aboard again, I gave the driver a good glaring, but I don't think he noticed. Other passengers asked me what that was all about -- having witnessed me run from one stop to the next.

here too

I encounter similar insanity on the part of bus divers here in Los Angeles.

Of course tomorrow you will wait patiently at Balboa and he will say go back to genesee and Mt Alifan.

Alternatively, he will make you run one more stop every day until he has you running all the way to school.

BTW, now would be a good time for a running related lawsuit. You tripped, or...you were mugged as you ran, or... you were overcome with exhaustion and expired...or

It's true that the free bus zone starts only at Balboa. He just seemed excessively strict about this towards a newbie.

Wow, that's insane. I guess bus drivers are trained to follow rules. Whenever I board the bus downtown in the free ride area and try to show my pass, they put their hand out to stop me and say "pay as you exit." But I was glad to see a bus driver tonight let some guy without the upgrade fare take the last bus home across the 520 bridge. She sternly told him a few times "well, you're not riding on this bus if you can't pay the 50 cents," but eventually relented.

Cracky.

Regardless, you have to be my new friend. What the regardless has to do with anything I don't know.

Hi, I've seen you around on the [livejournal.com profile] ucberkeley community, but I just noticed you were here in San Diego. So hi. Are you a native of SD?

You're doing research at Scripps? I tried applying there on the website, but no hits. If you're ever on the UCSD campus, I'm usually in the really nice Bio-E Building as a research volunteer.
