Well, University of Hawaii lost my transcript. I sent it to them on December 31, and their deadline was March 1, so maybe my application was too early. They finally wrote to me asking if I had sent one.. I said I did.. they dug around awhile and said, "whoops, here it is! sorry for the trouble! we'll be sending you an offer soon!" I guess that's good. Too bad it's so late in the game.

Also, my friend at University of Maryland just wrote with this bit: ``Sorry it took me so long to get back to you. I actually just spoke to Dr. Chant (the graduate chair). He said that they just submitted their acceptences. That does not mean that you will have gotten an answer in the mail yet, or that, if you haven't gotten an answer you weren't accepted. It just means that the wheels are starting to turn, so you should know soon. Keep me posted.

Just when I start to give up hope on getting into any of the remaining places, things start to get exciting again. I hope you've all got your fingers crossed for berkeley berkeley berkeley.

Here is the scoreboard:

Rnk11 School deadline notif. result notes cost2 temp

24The Ohio State UniversityJan (I haven't even applied yet.)$7.50

1. These are from US News and are generally worthless, although they do provide a general indication of the esteem in which a department is held. Any sensible ranking of individual specialties is wildly different.
2. Cost to apply, includes application fee ($0 - $80), cost to mail transcript ($7.50), cost to send test scores ($15), rounded up slightly to reflect various random other costs (postage is not insignificant). Does not include standardized test fees of $525.00 ($115 each for two takings of the General GRE, $165 for stand-by taking of the Computer Science GRE, and $130 for the Physics GRE. Yes, ETS is to be hated.)

hee, i would love to apply at hawaii. but wouldn't you know they have a terrible geosciences department?

i guess maybe if i was an igneous petrologist, things would be more promising.

did you apply to the oahu (honolulu) campus? we visited there last summer. very pretty.

PhDs.org puts them at 28th (rated for educational effectiveness and faculty quality), so they can't be that bad.

In physics they're something like 100th!

In oceanography they're top-10. hmmm.

department-hopping has always been a game I've played...

I am voting for carnegie mellon for two reasons:
1. mellon means friend in sindarin
2. my friend ilan from i-house (coolest brazilian ever) is probably going there
I still cannot believe you did not get into princeton. I met some of the prospective physics people, and yes, they seemed pretty smart, but a couple of them were straight out STUPID and MEAN, too. it would have been great to have you here. I am sure you would have loved the physics department, too.

I was going to apply to Wisconsin. The place looks nice. Too bad the experimental particle physics faculty isn't much good these days.

i went to a talk by susan coppersmith from UWisc last semester. that woman is awesome, though not in experimental particle physics. :) and she didn't have very nice things to say about UW, either.

That's even worse than when people not associated with the university say bad things about their faculty.

haha, no kidding. everyone was kind of shocked. she had pretty good reason to be bitter, though.

plus, she seemed very much like the sort who just said whatever the hell she wanted without thinking about who might care, and i love people like that!

You can spend a long time trying to get straight answers from anyone in Chant's office, but you shouldn't have any trouble getting in here. Have fun...
