I'm posting from the U of R library at the moment. Not too much going on. I came to campus today to check out what it's like with students present. I guess it's like universities everywhere.. I notice that there must be some standard fonts for signs in libraries, or something.

Looking at ads in the student union, it appears that rent for a room in an apartment or a house runs about $300 per month. wow! of course, there's apparently heating to be paid too. Then one of the ads listed "STRAIGHT MALE OR FEMALE ONLY" which I found pretty damn obnoxious.

There seems to be a rather heavy frat presense here.. everyone in the library seems really young (I guess they have fewer 6th year undergrads than berkeley..) and a lot are wearing their greek letters.

Still feeling all woozy with illness. I was going to try to do some homework on the plane, but I think I'll probably pass out immediately. That will be nice. Also, Chicago airport has Panda Express. Yummy orange chicken goodness.

BTW, when are these other grad schools going to email me? Columbia, Maryland, Brown, Princeton, Berkeley.. say something! I'm most eager to hear from Maryland and Brown since there's a chance I might go there, and the time for visiting is growing short.

Students control a lot at big public schools? I thought they controlled far less there.

And to me it seems that undergraduates at large public schools are abused, rather than the ones at small schools being babied. It just seems like decent human dignity to give them decent housing and allow them to take tests for free. I just heard the other day that Berkeley doesn't just charge for bluebooks for exams, but also for attending graduation - that's the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard of a university doing!

I suppose Berkeley students do tend to take longer on average to graduate than those at many private schools, but they also tend to start older. I'm always surprised at the number of undergrads here that are my age or older.

>>Then one of the ads listed "STRAIGHT MALE OR FEMALE ONLY" which I found pretty damn obnoxious.

More obnoxious than the Berkeley ads which want "mature lesbian only", "vegetarians only", "no Republicans, please", or, my favorite "must be open-minded".

hehe.. I don't think I've actually seen any ads like that, actually.. but it stands to reason that they exist. Still, I think that specifying a heterosexual subtenent is tantamount to specifying their race.

or specifying 'queer only'.. same deal.

'no republicans' is pretty dumb too.

"No jews or blacks" - almost sounds like a golf tournament!

the list of people admitted to princeton is out. it is extremely confidential, but I've managed to get a hold of it. your name is not on the list, but I've been informed that that does not mean anything, since the list has 50 names but that is just some strange selection. if more than a certain percentage of that group declines, more peope will be given offers.

I am still hopeful for a tobin at princeton. :)
