co-op dinner 2
Jun. 8th, 2005 10:25 amWe had another good dinner last night at the co-op--this time almost everyone who lives there was around for it! Additionally, we had two prospective members--one a vegan sociology student recently graduated from Wesleyan and the other a unicycling, deaf, vegan RIT computer science student. I set them both at work chopping vegetables as soon as they arrived. (-:
The co-op is turing out to be a really fun leadership experience. I want to have dinner cooked every night, but many of the members are, if not afraid of cooking, afraid of cooking for a large group. To make it happen I thought I'd demonstrate that it was possible, by declaring that I'd cook X for dinner on day Y without having any idea what or how I'd cook at that time. I think some are starting to realize that it doesn't take any special talents, and that the results are worthwhile.
It's also quite a Stone Soup enterprise--people filter into the kitchen and start helping, each taking over something that he knows about and at moments I'm left without anything to do. My cooking partner last night was Amol--he's fabulous. He stares into our spice cabinet with a look of consternation, then rolls up his sleaves and sets to work, "Okay, I'll see what I can do [with your meager collection of primitive American spices]!" and the results are delicious. Ryan's recipe for asparagus baked in olive oil with garlic salt and lime juice was also a hit, even with those skeptical of asparagus.
Afterwards there were viewings of Brazil (2nd floor) and Dr. Strangelove (attic).
Unfortunately my first house plant adoption was a failure--somehow our rendezvous at a certain place (a parking lot off Hylan Drive a couple miles out of town) at the appointed time didn't work out. I'm not sure if they didn't show, or if we were both there and didn't meet. [update: it seems the confusion was over the meaning of the phrase "next tuesday": I'm REALLY sorry for any confusion about meeting. We're going to Rochester NEXT Tuesday (the 14th). I thought I said that in an earlier email, but maybe I just assumed it. I'm really sorry. If you are available NEXT Tuesday (June 14th), I'd like to still meet you for the plant exchange. Please let me know. Ha!]
I think I'm taking this class called Fundamentals of Physical Acoustics. It's both exciting and boring at the same time--I don't know which force will win out. The professor has some nice explanations, like "impedance is the ratio of push to flow." I was inspired to check out the Physics dept's copy of Art of Electronics. Maybe one day I will own a copy of my own.
