Sep. 30th, 2004 11:22 pmI love it when Tuesday ends, because then the labs are over for the week, and I have "free time."
Yesterday I stayed up pretty much all night trying to solve a problem on the homework, filled with fear that I was doomed to flunk out of grad school. An hour before class I gave up on the "recommended" technique and took up again a hunch I'd had the night before — and it worked beautifully.
I spent most of that day sleeping on the futon in
vyncentvega's office.
Today
four and I drove to drop off our rent at our landlord's house. On the way home we stopped at "twelve corners" to get a bite to eat. Afterwards, the car wouldn't start, so we just walked home.
On the way we explored the grounds of the abandoned New York State Hospital that's just one block from our house. There's this huge highrise structure, totally abandoned. And an abandoned power plant! On the same grounds there is a psychiatric hospital that seems to be mostly abandoned as well, but that includes a building surrounded by optical tripwire, huge chainlink fences, and liberal doses of razorwire. It's labelled something like "forensic psychiatrics center" (speculate as you will) followed by the motto "where patients come first." We imagined muffled screams and X-files.
We celebrated Justin's birthday at India Cafe, which was yummy, but only about half as yummy as N&C, and at least twice as expensive. Afterwards we watched the presidential debates while eating frozen custard at Abbot's on Park Avenue.
two small announcements:
1. there's now a mailing list for the rochester student co-op project. sign up if interested! also i started a small co-op web page.
2. i'm now listed on facebook as tobin at pas dot rochester dot edu, so feel free to friend me
