I just applied to UMN and I am applying to "the" OSU, largely because (1) they are still accepting applications (!), and (2) they have no application fees.

One pithy bit on choosing a thesis topic: ``Never elaborate a baroque excrescence on top of existing but shaky ideas. Go right to the foundations and test the implicit but unexamined assumptions of an important body of work, or lay the foundations for a new research thrust.''
