special dinner etc

It's been a long strange -- good -- weekend. Commencement, free food from the chancellor. warm summer days spent wandering the campus, watching all the happy graduates with their parents and grandparents, all the happy sunbathers in the glades. Largely unexpected (but welcome) guest on Friday. Fantastic Special Dinner last night, happy partying till early in the morning... Nadia came for dinner, Hunter showed up later. hot tubbing. managed to fall asleep downstairs in a pile of people despite the noise.. Convoluted theme as usual, this time including "give each other awards" -- made an icosahedron (next step: geodesics) for Kenny and Alex -- thirty drinking straws pilfered from Café Strada, Fat Slice, and a few other places, plus one piece of string. Woke up and dashed downtown with Kenny, grabbing Jamba Juice on the way (first time for me), saw a play about Ramanujan at the Aurora Theater (quite an `intimate theatre experience' -- my toetips were just inches from the stage)... bought tickets from a nice elderly woman there, happy to part with some surplus subscription tickets.. ran into Seth Shoen, old friend and celebrity of sorts. Play was good, although I thought the dramatic structure showed through a bit too much at some times (obvious exposition).. there were comic bits, like the ghost of Fermat hitting on a Hindu goddess. BART to Lafayette with Kenny for the Downing Lab lab party.. that is, the party for our lab at LBL, out in the comfortable `countryside' of Lafayette.. at least a half-dozen languages represented... good food and apple pie. Glaesers gave us a ride home and now it's time to take a nap.. and then, get back to work.
