it's really hot here! apparently the day i arrived was the hottest day in 50 years. Allegedly it reached 45 degrees [in Tel Aviv?]! getting off the plane, even the pilot was taken aback by the heat.
but actually i'm kind of cold right now because of the air conditioning in this building.
so far everything has been really nice. I spent last night with my advisor and her family and we went to the beach somewhere north of Tel Aviv and it was just amazing how warm the water was, etc. very nice! I could hardly believe how hospitable everyone was.
Actually the physical environment seems a lot like the LA area... say, Long Beach. Although the Weizmann Institute seems more like San Juan Capistrano.
The weizmann institute is fairly impressive.. it's full of trees and quite a pleasant place too. The lab where I'll be working has six electron microscopes, each in its own specially built room. the labs are all full of exciting-looking apparatii.
I met my roommate briefly. His name is Michael and he just finished as a caltech undergrad and is now going on to grad school at harvard. I feel a bit overwhelmed by the credentials of the other interns. we live in a room in the basement of some on-campus housing just across the street from this building (one of the labs where i'll be working).
today i met with Asmahan who is a Palestinian girl from Hebron working on a PhD here -- we'll be working together on this project (3d reconstruction of a particular protein/DNA complex with applications in genetic engineering). She's quite nice and is very good about explaining everything... I think it will be fun! Also we have in common that neither of us speaks Hebrew.
tomorrow the work begins in earnest!
i have to try to stop saying "tack så mycket" and "hej då" and such.. and find some coffee!
okay, i'll write more later but i need to go hunt down some food now, i'm starving. just wanted to check in with everyone.
