Karneval meeting
Tonight was the first meeting of the Charter Section for the Karnival. We had a dinner of Pytt i Panna (a sort of ham and potato hash) with red beets and fried eggs, and ice cream for desert. I was selected for the Sexmästeriet `småsektion', whose job it is to run the parties for the Charter sektion itself. That's okay, but I'd kind of gotten attached to the idea of riding the Pågatåg across the Skåne, directing the enthusiastic public towards the Karnival ("all trains lead to Lund!" ?).
Another large subsection in Charter is our Vieriet, whose stated purpose is to keep the rest of the section happy! (And that task can include vad som helst — whatever necessary). Actually, at least half of the section is dedicated to serving the section itself. Only ten lucky fellows get the highly coveted `eskortservice' positions — running the party bus up to Uppsala and Linköping. The Expen subsection does everything else — perhaps all the useful services of our section, arranging everything that we have to arrange. Oh, and everyone has to serve a tour ofduty guarding the dormitories we have set up for visiting students (and whoever else) from other cities — they'll be in gymnasiums and tent cities and... I don't really know where else, but the whole operation sounds pretty fun. I don't think it will be nearly so much work as I expected. Our section (Charter) accounts for 140 of the 4500 Karnevlisters.
When I got to the meeting, I didn't know anyone there. I introduced myself to a girl who was also looking a little bit lost, and she replied, ``I don't speak Swedish!'' Funny how it's always the exchange students who are looking lost. She is from Lithuania and just got here in January (I said, ``Well! You're the first Lithuanian I've met — ever!'') She was quite interesting and funny. She also introduced me to her Polish friend Marcin Matuszewski.
