(no subject)
Jan. 16th, 2002 12:00 amToday I had my `muntlig tenta' for abstract algebra. It was kind of neat. The professor sat at his desk and asked me questions, and I stood at and wrote on the blackboard. The questions weren't very hard, but touched on most of the subjects covered by the class. He started by asking me about subgroups, which increased my confidence, and then I had to prove Lagrange's theorem and various matters related to factor groups, which was pretty easy. I faltered a bit in proving that coset multiplication (aH)(bH)=(ab)H is a well defined operation for normal subgroups H, but he offered a hint and then I figured it out. I think having an oral component to the exam is a good idea. If nothing else, it encourages you to study to diminish the prospect of embarrassment. (-:
