rochester co-op

So, I think it's time to get moving with starting a co-op in Rochester. An ambitious project, yes, but it needs to be done. I am going to get started with seeking out connections in the community and looking for a group of true believers. I am also going to contact existing co-ops in the region and ask them about their experiences, details of incorporation, etc. Here are some upstate NY co-ops:

Also need to start crafting the "vision"... My own includes elements of USCA co-ops, the Swedish Nations, and TEP house (at MIT). Any ideas on what to name this entity and/or its house? "Rochester Student Cooperative Association" could be spiced up a little. Oh yeah, if you're thinking, "What is a Co-op??" then you should read What is a Co-Op? from NASCO. Then let me know if you want to be part of this endeavor. (-:

excellent!

We should meet up sometime. Both for talking about the co-op, and for general niftiness purposes. Maybe sometime this weekend?

"Roch SCA"

Cool. Good luck with the efforts!

Mm, sorry, the acronym "SCA" is already taken: http://www.sca.org . I suppose there's probably a branch in or around Rochester.

How about just RCA instead? :)

P.S. It also stands for "Sexual Compulsives Anonymous."

[identity profile] nebulousmaze.livejournal.com 2004-09-26 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. Dang. How about "RO-SCAl" (now, I am going to cook up an acronym to pander to my fancy: Rochester Student Co-op ALliance).

I wanted to sound something like roches or rascals but heh. My imagination has deserted me briefly.

"Sexual Compulsives Anonymous."

That is hilarious, and quite clever. Ha ha ha.

[identity profile] fireflies100k.livejournal.com 2004-09-26 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, why thank you. I wish I could say it was my own creation, but I think it might actually be, like, true.

Alex says SCA stands for "Stupid Crap Association". So maybe it's good to avoid naming anything else with that acronym.

P.S. I am trying to figure out if I know you.

[identity profile] nebulousmaze.livejournal.com 2004-09-27 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I like Alex's definition - much easier on the ear.

P.S.: Good luck with your figuring out operation. If you get a definitive answer, let me know. :-)

[identity profile] nebulousmaze.livejournal.com 2004-09-26 04:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Oy! Cheers for the 5th place finish!! How are you going to spend your Google_donated $50? ;-)

[identity profile] nibot.livejournal.com 2004-09-26 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
thanks. (-: if I'd known there'd be cash prizes, I'd of tried a bit harder! (-:

did you participate?

[identity profile] nebulousmaze.livejournal.com 2004-09-26 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Nah, I am better off thinking of theoretical formulations and enjoying abstractions. Coding competition is the domain of whiz-kids - not for us low-entities. :-)

At least I know someone who did well.. so yay!!

that article about the swedish nations first made me frown, but then I agreed with the author. the entire system must look odd to an outsider: it looks weird to me now, after only three years in exile!

in following columns, he really warms up to the nations.

an index of sorts:

http://splorg.org:8080/people/tobin/projects/sverige/mccreary.html

which nation were you in?

[identity profile] emidala.livejournal.com 2004-09-26 06:19 pm (UTC)(link)
wermlands, of course. for 7 semesters. that's where the jedi academy was!

I spent a lot of time at blekingska, though, and occasionally stopped by hallands, lunds, and accidentally ostgota - but I never liked the "inner city" nations much. malmo and goteborgs, no thanks! how about you? [livejournal.com profile] deema who's currently on EAP at lund couldn't decide and is bartending at both wermlands and hallands now. :)

[identity profile] emidala.livejournal.com 2004-09-26 06:21 pm (UTC)(link)
oh damn it, none of the dailycal links seem to work! :(

[identity profile] nibot.livejournal.com 2004-09-26 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I was a member of Krischansta... I loved it! I didn't like their club ("Refuge"?) so much though, and usually went to Blekingska, Hallands, Wermlands as well.. Hallands was particularly great.

[identity profile] nibot.livejournal.com 2004-09-26 06:28 pm (UTC)(link)
The only thing wrong with Wermlands is that the ceilings are too low! (-:

[identity profile] emidala.livejournal.com 2004-09-26 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I know! even tiny me felt claustrophobic there at times!

I have never been at krischansta, which is disgraceful, since I went to high school in kristianstad!

Did you look at the interior of that Nickel City Place?! ~swoon~ Whatever you devise should have a house just like that!

[identity profile] nibot.livejournal.com 2004-09-26 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
complete with gargoyles!

[identity profile] furzicle.livejournal.com 2004-09-27 06:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's time to reveal the truth, expose all, come out about the fact...
that you are a SECOND GENERATION COOPER!
That's right, the parental units were also co opers.
Buwahahaha

Upstate NY seems like a good co-op region. There should be more. The reason I chose Berkeley over CMU is the lack of co-ops in Pittsburgh. If Rochester gets one, perhaps someone some day will do the same for Pittsburgh.
