the friendly dogs of athens

For some reason there seemed to be very many extremely good-natured but apparently stray dogs in Athens. I don't know what the story is - they did have collars, but they spent their days loafing around in the park. I wondered whether they were friendly and ventured a pet. They loved the attention!

Hmm, I wonder if these dogs are friendly?

Yes they are!

Most of them actually are not homeless. People let out their big dogs in the morning, and simply hope for the best. Normally they go home when they're hungry. I used to live next to a house "owned" by a huge German shepherd and he would stand on the roof, barking at everything, until the owners let him out. Then he quickly trotted up the hill to join his buddies in front of the Akropolis.
