the friendly dogs of athens

For some reason there seemed to be very many extremely good-natured but apparently stray dogs in Athens. I don't know what the story is - they did have collars, but they spent their days loafing around in the park. I wondered whether they were friendly and ventured a pet. They loved the attention!

Hmm, I wonder if these dogs are friendly?

Yes they are!

Most of them actually are not homeless. People let out their big dogs in the morning, and simply hope for the best. Normally they go home when they're hungry. I used to live next to a house "owned" by a huge German shepherd and he would stand on the roof, barking at everything, until the owners let him out. Then he quickly trotted up the hill to join his buddies in front of the Akropolis.

The government rounded them up for the Olympics but then put them right back on the streets afterwards. I absolutely adored the dogs of Athens and the cats on Mykonos.

Maybe the Greeks believe in their dogs way more than Americans. Can you imagine if Americans locked up their teenagers every day? You'd bark, too!

BTW, I was figuring that your reference to Athens in this post was to some new Athens in Louisiana! D'oh!
