Today I met a grad student who took 2 years off between the first two semesters of grad school to build houses in the middle of America via Americorps. I thought that was pretty awesome.
I think you're referring to one of our optics prospective students that was here this weekend. I talked to her at our party last night; she seemed pretty cool. Also, she was fairly sure about coming here in the fall.
