bait and switch

9. It turns out that the $170 roundtrip airfare from here to the Dominican Republic is not for real. The real deal is that there is a $170 "fare" followed by $120 in "fees". Nonetheless yesterday I checked out one of the public library's copies of Lonely Planet's Dominican Repulic and Haiti, and am now beginning construction on a hot air balloon.

I had this same disillusioning experience when trying to book tickets to Santiago - after figuring it would be $300 pp for F & I on top of our (okay, pretty cheap) fare to NYC, I decided it wasn't worth it. It'd be worth it if we had a few weeks to spend there, but for five days? No thanks, I'd rather wait.

Although, Tobin, you may consider going to Puerto Rico - since it's domestic, I think the fees would be markedly less. You may be able to do a roundtrip for something closer to $200.
