I saw fireflies for the first time last night.

The wonderful thing about California is that we basically DON'T have annoying bugs, with the exception of mosquitoes in places. And, since it's so dry, there are actually not many places that are plagued by them. We sit outside and enjoy evenings and wonder why everybody in the rest of the country sits inside of screened porches.

But, we don't have fireflies. Alas.
I have never seen one. And I've been around a pretty long time.

You mean "the wonderful thing about SOUTHERN California..."

You wouldn't believe how many mosquitoes there are up here. If I leave my bathroom window open a bit in July, I'll have 15 mosquitoes flying around my apartment. I get 15 bites every time I go camping (though I seem to be filet mignon for the buggers). Same is true whether I'm on the coast in Arcata or further east. And the mosquitoes in the forests are enormous, though that is good since they're easier to mangle.
