The democrats have been losing support of the working-class people for a long time. My theory as to why is because we end up sounding like intelectual elitists. Calling your opponents "morons" is part of the problem.

Yes. Either they are aware that they voted against their own interests (in which case they are self-hating), or they are unaware that they voted against their own interests (which brings us back to them being morons).
Again, this is why they didn't vote democratic. You assume they are motivated by selfish motives.
Perhaps they are not. Perhaps they make choices based on principles. They believe in freedom. They believe in liberty. They believe in protecting one's own. George W. Bush offered them someone who believes in those same things.
Dismissing people as morons because their notion of doing the right thing isn't just looking selfishly at their own benefit is, IMO, wrong. I also believe it reduces your chances of winning over those people.
