GOES-EAST tells me I have some chance of seeing an hour of clearing. But if the winds are right, the end could be this evening!

Thunderstorm last night. Those should have stopped two months ago.

[livejournal.com profile] four posted some picture... you should friend him, he's cool and we have many adventures together.

you should invite diane for the hot chocolate party.. she'd love it. in fact, i myself am now going to go have some hot chocolate, because the sun has set and the temperature is on its way to 0 C.

yikes, rochester sounds scary. i'm heading up north myself next week (chicago) - i guess it's likely to be rather cold up there. how i miss that african summer...

[identity profile] nibot.livejournal.com 2004-10-23 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
visiting Fermilab? Yeah, Chicago is kind of sort of in this neighborhood, at least in the California perspective, and in that all flights to Rochester come from Chicago (pretty much). what are you doing there?

How are the African winters? I think I might need to spend Summer 2006 in Africa. Big place, I know. My friend just accepted a peace corps assignment in Zambia.. I ought to visit, eh?

[identity profile] pixieza.livejournal.com 2004-10-23 07:31 pm (UTC)(link)
im off to the division of nuclear physics of the aps fall meeting (http://="dnp04.phy.anl.gov") where they are making me give a talk (http://www.aps.org/meet/DNP04/baps/abs/S1020.html#SDH.004) (horror of horrors!)

hmm african winters. in cape town it rains and rains and rains but in other places its the best time of year because it isn't quite so unbearably hot. my dad was born in zambia but i haven't been there yet. i think you'd love africa.

what's the story with mexico in january? is it still happening (because i'd really like it to)

[identity profile] nibot.livejournal.com 2004-10-23 09:41 pm (UTC)(link)
wow.. talk! exciting, and scary!

africa -- yes. capetown to zambia, summer 2006. eh?

mexico -- ryan ([livejournal.com profile] four) and i were just discussing it on the way home from the grocery store! yes, it's definitely a go, in one form or another. any research you could do would certainly help.

I'm thinking of driving to La Paz (Baja California Sur) and taking the ferry to Mazatlan, driving up in the mainland, entering the U.S. again around Tucson. The question is whether this is feasible and not 100% crazy. We don't want to be driving all the time, and you can't drive at night and the winter days are short. I'm thinking of leaving as soon after christmas as possible, and Ryan and I have to be back at school on January 12. So we have about two weeks.

If that is too crazy, we can do a more limited version. One possibility is to drive to El Paso, TX and turn right down into Chihuahua to the Copper Canyon national park.

If limited to a weekend we could go to the Canon de Guadalupe hot springs, visit San Felipe.

Other schemes, like flying to Belize or the Yucatan, should also be considered.

I recommend going to the public library and checking out their collection of mexico books. The People's Guide to Mexico is excellent general mexico travel info but some info about specific places to go is needed too. Such as, where are the hot springs? (-:

I plan to take the Vanagon.. if we have any more people (than you, diane, ryan, and me) then we should probably have a 2nd vehicle.
It's a manual transmission vehicle, so being able to drive manual will be helpful.

it's almost kinda sorta sunny here, too! which is weird. i hear that doesn't happen much.

hey, i think i might try to sell this AGU idea to my advisor. and if he signs off on my registration fee and everything, i'll buy my plane ticket and find a place to stay. and i am counting on you to help me find a place to stay, because you said you would. :)

[identity profile] nibot.livejournal.com 2004-10-23 06:42 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, I can totally get you a place to stay, although it might be on a couch in Berkeley (~30 minute BART ride from the City).

[identity profile] squarkz.livejournal.com 2004-10-23 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
yep, that's what i expected.

i think i am also setting up camp with [livejournal.com profile] bobosan for part of the week if i go, but i'm trying to spread out my free lodging over as many people as possible. :)

I second the motion to use three-exclamation-marks for this event. I spent a lot of today just sitting and looking at how pretty it was. From the nice warm inside, of course.

yup.. we went to Mendan Ponds and wandered around in the nifty scenery, around one of the ponds. check out the livejournal of my awesome roommate, [livejournal.com profile] four
