UC Berkeley "just says no"

March 19, 2004

Dear Mr. Fricke:

I regret to inform you that you have not been accepted for graduate study in Applied Science and Technology (AS&T) at UC Berkeley.

The Berkeley campus has a strict enrollment ceiling and, thus, each program is limited in the number of new students it may admit each year. The Admissions Committee has the difficult task of selecting students from a large pool of well-qualified applicants. This year, AS&T received a record number of applications, which made the decision-making process even more difficult. Unfortunately, the AS&T Admissions Committee was unable to recommend admission to many outstanding applicants.

I am sorry that we do not have a place for you this year and hope that you will be able to make other arrangements to achieve your goals.

Sincerely,

Nathan Cheung, Chair
Graduate Group in Applied Science and Technology

hey,
Although it sucks to get a letter like this, maybe it's good that you will go somewhere else for grad school, no? It seems that you are into travel and visiting new places so moving to a new city (like Pittsburgh) seems like a great change! I for one am pretty excited to apply to grad schools next year and go somewhere new (and somewhere more like Lund).

Anyway sorry it has taken me so long to respond, but in response to your question: I live at Sherman. I guess I like that it's clean (it's hard to find a clean coop) but not having boys around is getting old.

Enjoy the last few days of spring break!
diana

I would love to go someplace "a little more like Lund" — have you found any? (-: Where are you thinking of applying?

Since you're in Berkeley, it would be fun to meet up sometime.

Yeah...I guess finding a city that is Lund-like is a little on the unrealistic side =(. But I am definately ready to leave Berkeley. I have no idea where I'll apply, I guess to places in the top 10 and I'll pray and cross my fingers and hope for the best. Also to places that are decent in CS and also feature a beach nearby like UCSD.

And let's meet up, do you ever go to math tea?
