I know absolutely nothing about music, electronic or otherwise, but a chance meeting with one of these things at MIT in November convinced me that I had to build one. It is a clone of the Roland TB-303 sequencer/synthesizer.

It's really abominable, isn't it? The odd thing is, the Schaum's outline of Continuum Mechanics, which is also a required textbook (!) for this course I'm taking, is also written by one of the Mases, yet manages to be clear, concise, coherent, etc.

I was just thinking the other day that maybe I should start reading up on / take some classes in some geophysics topics, so that when I go back (!) to my old job at scripps institute I'll have a better idea what's going on.

How's school going? You just started a new quarter, right?

ooh, i laughed when we were assigned schaum's outline for — linear algebra, i think? multivariable calc? but it turned out to be a lifesaver.

if you are interested in reading some geophysics, you could do a lot worse than turcotte and schubert. i'm not even a geodynamicist anymore, and i find myself constantly taking it down off the shelf to look things up. there are valid complaints about the way in which they derive some things — for instance, they rely on a lot of "tricks" that are useful to readers who know the material already, but don't really provide the mathematical foundation we might aspire to — but i can't think of a book that presents as much material in as accessible a manner.

yes, the spring quarter started on monday, and i promptly got a viral respiratory infection of some kind and stayed in bed for three days. i have high hopes for getting some research done before leaving in june, but i already feel like the dark forces are conspiring against me.
