automated essay scoring

The GRE (annoyingly similar to the SAT but for getting into gradschool) now includes two essay responses. There is an online practice feature called ScoreItNow! that lets you submit sample essay responses, and for $10 they'll score them for you. So far so good. But here's the odd part: Your responses are scored by a computer program.

The GRE itself, however, still uses humans.

They've been talking about that for at least five years. I'm surprised they dont' actually use it for the real test yet. It would make people understand better what it is. And at least provide more uniform standards for everyone. Though perhaps some randomization is a good thing.

I don't see how their e-grader could possibly grade on the standards published for the GRE essays, unless they've made some major leaps and bounds in AI. I imagine the MS Word "your writing is of grade level X" feature.. S-:
